Cross Country
Rowland Hall Cross Country offers students opportunities to learn about, push, and expand their physical and mental boundaries with like-minded teammates and coaches.
By distinguishing themselves as student-athletes, runners commit to both parts of that distinction: students and athletes. They are willing to balance the demands of academic studies, running, and team loyalty.
While cross-country running is both physically and mentally demanding, it’s an activity all team members should enjoy. What makes a successful season for head coach Mark Oftedal? “I’ll know, years from now, when I run into an old team member, and they tell me they still enjoy running, and they make time to fit it into their life, or they’re training for a marathon, or have just set a new personal best in their latest race," he said.
Meet the Coach
Head coach Mark Oftedal has been running for as long as he can remember, from racing alongside boxcars in elementary school to pacing tracks in college. In 1996, he began his coaching career, and he became Rowland Hall's head coach in 2007. Since then, he's led his cross country teams to five state and 21 region championships. Today, Coach Oftedal teaches wellness in addition to coaching cross country and track & field.
