This season consisted of growth and maturity for the Rowland Hall basketball program as, for the first time in six years, the varsity team was led by only two seniors. From the first game of the season, the team was thrown into the proverbial fire and it was there that our identity was forged. We caught our stride midway through the season, and it was then that the blueprint to win was created. I am truly thankful for the 34 student-athletes who committed to working hard this season, who bought into our culture, and who dedicated themselves to achieving excellence.
Our program was led by captains Yeshi Tsering, Max Rohovit, and Luc Dowdle. We finished the season with a 12-12 record, winning the Region 17 championship with a 9-1 record. After soundly defeating Millard in the first round of the state 2A tournament in an exciting game in the Den, we lost to a tough Grand County team on the road in the second round of the tournament and were thus eliminated from further state play.
Rowland Hall had four players represented on the Region 17 All-Region Team: senior Yeshi Tsering, junior Will Chin, junior Luc Dowdle, and sophomore Landen Brady. Yeshi Tsering was also named to the Deseret News 2023–2024 2A All-State Team and was chosen as a participant in the Utah High School Basketball Coaches Association (UHSBCA) Senior All-Star Game.
The season was filled with highlights, whether it was the consistent scoring explosions from Yeshi Tsering, Luc Dowdle, and Ian Mellor, setting the 3-point shooting standard with 96 made 3s, or Landen Brady with multiple double-digit scoring and rebounding games. Assistant coaches Terrence Drisdom and Zander Smith and I were very proud to see the improvement made throughout the season and appreciate all the dedication and hard work from our student-athletes! We also are appreciative of the hard work and support behind the scenes on the part of our administration, faculty, staff, parents, and student fans—thank you!
End-of-season awards went to Yeshi Tsering, Most Valuable Player; Ian Mellor, Most Improved; Luc Dowdle, Coaches’ Award; Will Chin, Defensive Player of the Year; and Landen Brady, Newcomer of the Year.
Looking forward to what next season brings!
