2022 brought another chance to display the talent of the Winged Lions boys golf program. Seniors Carson Kawabata, Jack Vitek, and Kai Dowdle, and juniors Matt Sieigal, Kelton Ferriter, and Mikko Anderson led the way this season, earning a fifth consecutive region title at Rose Park Golf Course.
At the 2A State Championship, held at Mountain View Golf Course in early October, the Winged Lions had a second-place finish with a two-day total of 636 (+60). Two of our players had great individual performances at state, earning them All-State honors. Matt Siegal finished in a tie for third place, with a two-day total of 145 (+1), while Kelton Ferriter finished in a tie for eighth place, with a two-day total of 157 (+13). Two others on our state team, Carson Kawabata and Jack Vitek, were named Honorable Mention All-State. All the hard work throughout a long hot summer paid off in the end!
Rounding out the 2022 roster were ninth graders Jax Salinas, Samuel Bateman, and Madsen Varner; junior Nate Kantor; and seniors Alex Yang and Asa Braun Freck. The competition that these guys provided throughout the season was vital to our success as a team.
End-of-season award recipients included Matt Siegal, Most Valuable Player; Mikko Anderson, Most Improved Player; Jack Vitek and Carson Kawabata, Coaches’ Award; and Samuel Bateman, Heart of the Lion Award.
Many thanks and congratulations to our seniors for their leadership—you will be missed. Coach Brady Hansgen and I are very excited to see what the future holds for our talented returning young athletes!
