Boys Soccer, Spring 2025

Head Coach Joe Murray
Assistant Coach John Schill
Assistant Coach Anthony Sanchez

This year promised to be a year of transition and growth after seven players from last year’s championship starting lineup graduated. However, that also presented opportunities for all the returning and incoming players to stake a claim for involvement at varsity level. A roster of 34 players convened at the start of the season and 29 of those players saw some varsity playing time during the season.

The varsity team was led by senior captains Angus Hickman and Owen Taylor, but players from junior, sophomore, and freshman classes logged significant minutes over the course of the season. Given the significant turnover from last year, and several injuries that occurred, this was always going to be a challenging season. Nonetheless, the boys acquitted themselves well in the tough 2A northern region, finishing the regular season with a record of 5-7. The team was ranked 10th in the season-ending RPI. However, going into the postseason, the team was confident, and beat Gunnison Valley, the seventh seed in the round of 16. In a tight quarterfinal encounter, the team lost 0-1 to American Heritage, the eventual state runner-up. To highlight the team’s late-season improvement, we had previously lost 0-5 to American Heritage in the regular season.

Despite the quarterfinal defeat, I am proud of the development the team displayed, particularly the improvements in the second half of the season. This was predominantly a young varsity team that will continue to improve next year. The JV team also deserves praise for its performances throughout the season, exhibiting the same level of player development as the core varsity group.

Several players were honored at the year-end banquet. Noa Fukushima won the MVP award, while Fran Fierro and Miles Li were selected as Defensive MVP and Offensive MVP, respectively. Noa, Fran, and Miles were also selected to the All-Region Team. Senior co-captains Angus Hickman and Owen Taylor were the recipients of the Coaches’ Award. Owen was also honored as both Academic All-Region and Academic All-State. Charlie Von Maack, who was outstanding for the JV team, was selected as the most improved player.

I would like to thank Zack Alvidrez and team in the athletics office, school administration, faculty, and staff for all of their support throughout the season. I would also like to thank parents for their support, with special thanks to Amy Taylor and Tammy Fukushima as Booster Club liaisons. Thank you to both assistant coaches, Jack in his fourth year and Anthony in his first year, for their valuable support and advice throughout the season. Finally, I would like to thank all of the players for making this an enjoyable season, with particular thanks to our five seniors—Raphael Andreae, Sam Bateman, Luc Dowdle, Angus Hickman, and Owen Taylor—for their contributions to the soccer program.
