By Brianna Coopman, Head Coach
Golf in the spring this year, to no one’s surprise, brought many challenges for our team. At every event but the state tournament, our players were faced with unseasonably cold, wet, windy weather, and they played through it all with an amazingly upbeat attitude that made Assistant Coach Spencer Schindler and me very proud to be their coaches.
We won every Region 17 event and walked away from each of those competitions having improved and grown as a team and as individuals. We were excited to cruise to our third consecutive region championship, with Arden Louchheim taking first-place medalist honors and Jasmine Le earning the third-place medal.
We entered the State 2A Tournament with a target on our back as the two-time defending state champions, and we knew that we were going to have to play well and play consistently, as we had all season, to pull out our final victory of 2023. Although it was a very close finish and every player on our team fought for every shot and gave their best on a tough course, we fell short of the championship by two strokes. Three-time state champion Arden Louchheim took second, a mere stroke off the pace, and Jasmine Le placed third.
Coach Schindler and I are proud of all that the team faced this year and how hard they worked during the season. This group has been together for four seasons, earning two state titles, a state runner-up finish, and three region championships—quite an amazing list of accomplishments. Five of the six team members will be graduating, and the leadership and talent of Arden Louchheim, Jasmine Le, Katerina Gianoulis, Mei Mei Johnson, and Angel Wang will be missed. Gray Mayetani, our lone junior, will anchor the Winged Lions team in 2024.
Congratulations to Arden Louchheim, Katerina Gianoulis, and Angel Wang, who were honored with Academic All-Region recognition, and to Arden Louchheim and Angel Wang, who were also named to the 2A Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) Academic All-State team as well.
End-of-season awards went to Arden Louchheim, Most Dedicated & Valuable Player; Mei Mei Johnson, Most Improved Player; Katerina Gianoulis, Most Passionate Player; Jasmine Le, Most Fearless Player; Gray Mayetani, Best Attitude & Team Player; and Angel Wang, Best All-Around Student-Athlete.
Thanks for a wonderful season!
