By Spencer Schindler, Head Coach
Our young 2024 girls golf team persevered through some difficult weather conditions and an almost daily change of schedule because of Mother Nature. While this spring in northern Utah felt more like winter much of the time, our team never hesitated to get out there and practice, no matter the conditions.
We had five first-season players on the roster this year and, while competitive golf can be intimidating, these five rookies, led by returning senior captain Gray Mayetani, carried themselves as if they were veterans. They were hungry and ready to get better, open-minded, and readily accepted coaching feedback, so they improved on an almost daily basis. Whether it came to swing changes or golf course management, each player eagerly wanted to hear input on how they could improve—this positive attitude made coaching them a joy!
Swing changes can be difficult, time-consuming, and hard to execute on the golf course, especially in difficult weather conditions; however, our players—Kate Weissman, Lila Bate, Sabina Lowe, Lucy Dahl, Izzy Rust, and Gray Mayetani—brought their mechanical adjustments to the course and executed them well.
We were pleased to recognize several players with end-of-season awards, including Kate Weissman, Most Valuable Player; Lucy Dahl, Most Improved; and Gray Mayetani, Heart of a Lion Award. Congratulations also go out to Izzy Rust and Gray, who were recognized with Academic All-Region and Academic All-State honors this year.
Assistant Coach Brady Hansgen and I wish our two seniors the best as they move on and thank them for their leadership. We are very excited for what the future holds for the remaining strong group of young, driven players—athletes who have committed to working on their game during the off season. The future of Winged Lions girls golf looks bright!
