A Note from Jackie Hertgen, Middle School Athletic Director
What an active, fun and successful spring MS sports season for our Winged Lions! We introduced a new sport offering, boys volleyball. See the recap of the inaugural season below, written by Coach Sarah Yoon. Our girls soccer team, composed of 7th and 8th graders, went undefeated this season, led by veteran coaches Scott Langone and Bobby Kennedy. Co-Ed cross country had a large number of participants across the three grades with final team standings in the Top 4 for all Divisions.
We are fortunate to have a dedicated and experienced coaching staff who put in much time, effort, and care to develop our student-athletes. Thank you to Coaches: Sara Donnelly, Janice Middleton, Kayden Al-Mosawi for Cross Country; Sarah Yoon for boys volleyball, and Scott Langone and Bobby Kennedy for Girls Soccer.
A heartfelt thank you to our Winged Lions families for the support throughout the season. Please read on for a recap of each team’s season highlights.
Seventh- and Eighth-Grade Girls Soccer: A Team
Coaches Scott Langone and Bobby Kennedy
Rowland Hall Girls' A Soccer Team had a tremendous season this year. The players began the year focused on developing fundamental skills and learning to play together as a team. Throughout the season, they demonstrated impressive growth and cohesion.
Their hard work paid off in a big way: the 2025 Middle School Winged Lions captured the first annual Wasatch Athletic Conference in-season tournament championship, defeating Waterford 3–1 in the final. The team also completed an undefeated regular season with a 4-0-1 record.
The players should be incredibly proud of their improvement and accomplishments this season. Go Winged Lions!
Boys Volleyball: A Strong Start
Coach Sarah Yoon
What an incredible debut season for our boys volleyball team! Many of our players stepped onto the court with no prior experience, but their commitment, determination, and rapid growth throughout the season were nothing short of inspiring. We faced off against teams with multiple grade levels, yet our players rose to the occasion with unwavering positivity and grit. With two exciting victories and narrowly losing the championship finals in the tiebreaker game, the boys kept everyone on the edge of their seats. The energy on the bench was exciting and full of team spirit.
This season was not about wins and losses; it was about laying the groundwork for something bigger. As pioneers of our boys' volleyball program, our team finished the season eager to continue developing their skills. We’re proud of everything they’ve accomplished and look forward to next year. The future of boys volleyball here is bright and just getting started. Go Winged Lions!
Sixth-, Seventh-, and Eighth-Grade Co-Ed Cross Country: A and C Divisions
Coaches Sara Donnelly, Janice Middleton, and Kayden Al-Mosawi
Rowland Hall Middle School cross country had a fantastic season! Our runners attacked each practice and race with positive, fun, can-do attitudes. We encourage our runners to set goals for the season. Because each race includes the same teams’ runners, our athletes are able to track their improvements. Some of those goals included running faster in each progressive race, besting their finishing placement in the previous meet, running throughout an entire 1.5 mile race, or passing a set amount of racers. As coaches, we were so proud when our athletes reported that they met, and even surpassed, their personal bests. Each of the four Rowland Hall teams (sixth-grade girls, sixth-grade boys, seventh- and eighth-grade girls, and seventh- and eighth-grade boys) secured podium finishes at one or more of the meets. Coaches Sara Donnelly, Janice Middleton, and Kayden Al-Mosawi agree the 2025 season was a total blast!
Congratulations to all of our fantastic athletes! Runners who earned top-10 finishes are bolded.
