Middle School Athletics, Winter 2024–2025

A Note from Jackie Hertgen, Middle School Athletic Director

The winter basketball season proved to be a fun, exciting, and successful one! The season was split, with the girls playing first, from early November through mid-December, and concluded with the boys teams participating in the Wasatch Athletic Conference (WAC) league end-of-season tournaments during the week of February 24. Between the two seasons, six teams participated in WAC league end-of-season tournaments. Here are the results:

Girls:
C Team: Second place overall
B Team: Participated as the #5 seed in the tournament
A Team: Second place overall

Boys:
C Team:
Second place overall
B Team: Champions!
A Team: Second place overall

We are fortunate to have a dedicated coaching staff who put in much time, effort, and care to develop the student-athletes. Thank you to coaches Kayden Al-Mosawi, Paulino Beach, Sam Duffy, Sarah Yoon, and Olivia Young.

A heartfelt thank you to our Winged Lions families for your support throughout the season.

Please read on for a recap of each team’s season highlights.

The Middle School girls A Team had an awesome season filled with growth, determination, and teamwork. This girls B Team basketball season was a journey of growth, hard work, and fun. For many of the players, it was their first time stepping onto the court, and they quickly learned that trying something new could push their limits in other sports as well. Along the way, they discovered that mistakes are part of the learning process and a stepping stone toward improvement. They worked hard to improve their ball-handling skills, understood the importance of offense and defense, and learned to play as a team. The girls gave their all in every game, fighting hard and building lasting friendships. From the laughter-filled bus rides to the unforgettable moments on the court, they made every experience something special while displaying great sportsmanship. I'm incredibly proud of the team's effort and resilience, and the joy they found in the game. Everyone worked hard, learned a lot, and, most importantly, had fun! I hope everyone returns next season to continue their growth and passion for the sport.

Sixth-Grade Girls Basketball C Team

Coaches Kayden Al-Mosawi and Olivia Young

The C Team girls basketball season was a great success, full of growth in the players' skills, understanding of the game, and ability to play and support one another. This growth was seen in the game results, as the team finished in second place and put up a great fight in the championship game against an undefeated Prince of Peace team. There was never a practice or a game where the team was not completely focused on improving, and their abilities on the court improved greatly because of this consistent mindset and approach.

Seventh- and Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball B Teams

Coaches Sarah Yoon and Paulino Beach

Our boys B1 and B2 teams both had an amazing season! The coaches were impressed with their work ethic, in both practices and games, and it paid off. After a few tough games early in the season, they learned from it and worked hard to get better, securing a seed in the end-of-season tournament. Their teamwork and strategy were on point, and they showed how tough they can be by beating Waterford in the finals and winning the championship! This showed each of them, as well as everyone, how much they cared and how much they enjoyed playing together. It was a fun time for all that were involved this season, and coaches Sarah and Paulino are so very proud of these boys.

Seventh- and Eighth Grade Boys Basketball A Team

Coach Sam Duffy

This season, the A Team finished in second place! This accomplishment is a testament to the effort each player put in, both in practices and on game days.

Throughout the season, our athletes developed key skills such as defensive positioning, ball movement, shooting accuracy, and court awareness. More importantly, they grew as teammates—showing resilience, leadership, and sportsmanship in every challenge they faced. Their growth as players and individuals has been inspiring to watch.

A big thank you to our players for their commitment and to our parents for their unwavering support throughout the season. This team has accomplished so much, and we can’t wait to see what they achieve next!
