Several Winged Lion student-athletes were recognized at the recent Senior Celebration with special awards by the Athletics Department for their contributions over the past four years to our programs.
The Winged Lion Outstanding Athlete Award is given in recognition to multi-sport athletes for their high level of athletic ability, commitment, dedication, and self-motivation, as well as positive leadership, sportsmanship, coachability, and support of their teammates over their entire high school athletic careers. This year’s Outstanding Athlete recipients were Bea Wall (soccer and basketball) and Kelton Ferriter (golf and soccer).
The Lee Scholar-Athlete Award is a gift of the S. Whitfield Lee family for athletes who have demonstrated strong leadership and athletic talent in competitive team sports and who are in the top half of the class academically. Dean Hijjawi (cross country and track and field) and Lauren Bates (volleyball and softball) were recognized with this award.
The Lionhearted Award is given to outstanding senior athletes who, during their athletic careers, displayed a high level of dedication to their teams, demonstrated a strong work ethic and coachability, and competed with the heart of a lion each and every day. Recipients of this recognition this year include Omar Alsolaiman (Ultimate Frisbee); Mikko Anderson (golf and soccer); Brandt Barker (soccer); Nate Kanter (golf and soccer); Eric Lu (tennis); Thomas Shakib (swimming); Matt Siegal (golf); Yeshi Tsering (basketball); Sophie Baker (tennis); Paige Connery (soccer); Regan Hodson (volleyball); Gray Mayetani (golf); Quinn Orgain (soccer and basketball); Zakrie Smith (soccer and basketball); Lilly Swindle (softball and volleyball); and Sophie Zheng (swimming).
Congratulations to these seniors, and to all seniors who competed for the green and white these past four years, as they helped lead their teams to 22 region and 13 state titles—including a record-tying five state titles this year—and have led our athletics program to top-five finishes in the Deseret News All-Sports awards each year of their careers. Many have earned All-Region and/or All-State honors, and many received recognition as Academic All-Region and/or Academic All-State student-athletes. One senior has committed to competing in their sport at the college level. You leave a legacy of excellence, class of 2024, and you will be much missed!
