The 2025 softball season blasted off as one of our best, with 14 excited athletes taking the field on March 1.  With several new faces joining the team, we spent the early days of practice reviewing basic skills and rules and experimenting with players at different positions as we firmed up the lineup. The coaching staff was excited to start game play in our newly assigned, though very tough, region, as our athletes showed great work ethic and steady and marked improvement each day.

Some season highlights included a trip to Coalville to face the North Summit Braves on their new turf softball field, a heartbreaking nailbiter that we lost by a single run. We were able to redeem ourselves against the Braves, however, as our Winged Lions came to play on Senior Recognition Day. Compete they did, as we played our best game of the season, capturing a decisive and exciting 23-5 victory fueled by a whopping 23 hits!

Our Rowland Hall–hosted 22nd annual Swing for Life Breast Cancer Tournament went off without a hitch with beautiful weather, exciting softball games, and successful fundraising. Our Winged Lions played some solid ball, making numerous great plays in the field and coming up big at the plate with singles to home runs in the five games they played; our game against Skyline was the highlight of the tournament as we lost a heartbreaker 15-14 to the 5A school. We joined the other 10 teams who competed in the tournament to help raise over $17,000 for the Huntsman Cancer Foundation, highlighted by a very successful “miracle minute” pass-the-hat event that pulled in $1,200 in a mere 60 seconds!

After losing a close one to 3A Judge in the Swing for Life Tournament, we hosted them again the following week. Our athletes shined as they battled back and forth and held strong, coming up with a 21-17 win on our home field.

We qualified to play in the first round of the 2A State Tournament and traveled to Beaver High School to face off with Kanab in a playoff game. The score seesawed back and forth throughout as our athletes played some great defense and showed grit at the plate; however, the Cowboys had a strong fifth inning, pulled ahead, and we were unable to close the gap and were thus eliminated from further play. We were so very proud of the strong performance our athletes had in this exciting state tournament showing.

The Winged Lions improved a ton over the season, as they always played with passion and heart, battling to the last out and enjoying every minute of the experience! It was an amazing group of kids who really gelled and became a solid and unified team unit. We broke team records and state records, and boasted an Academic All-Stater in first base player Rebecca Miles! Center fielder Jane Borst captured the batting championship for the whole state of Utah, as well as placed eighth in the nation with a batting average hitting .811 to end the season.

We recognized several players with awards at our end-of-season team celebration, including MVP honors to pitcher Emma Hare; the Coaches’ Award to Phoebe LaBelle and Rebecca Miles; Most Improved Player to Sophie Cheng; Batting Champion to Jane Borst; Defensive Award to Bb Earl Comeros; and Golden Glove Award to Brooke Brown. Jane Borst, Brooke Brown, and Emma Hare were named to the All-Region Team.

We say so long to five talented senior leaders: Brooke Brown, Bb Earl Comeros, Emma Hare, Phoebe LaBelle, and Rebecca Miles. Other team members included Jane Borst, Mackenzie Boyer, Sophie Cheng, Reilly Cooper, Mina Granger, Eliana Jansen, Emery Lieberman, Ruby Rosh, and Hayden Thompson. Assistant coaches Kendra Tomsic and Leslie Varoz and I are so proud of and grateful for these kids and all the great memories we shared this season.
