At the close of each school year, the Deseret News and the Utah Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (UIAAA) recognize athletic programs in all classifications with the Deseret News’ All-Sports Awards and the UIAAA Director’s Cup Awards.
The Deseret News All-Sports Award denotes the top overall athletic programs in each classification. Schools earn points throughout the year for placing in the top eight at state championships: ten for first, eight for second, six for third, five for fourth, four for fifth, three for sixth, two for seventh, and one for eighth (points are divided when team tie). Points are earned in football, cross country, golf, basketball, wrestling, swimming, baseball, track, soccer, tennis, volleyball, softball, and lacrosse.
Our Winged Lion teams earned a total of 69.5 points in 2020–2021—enough to secure a third-place finish in 2A, even though we don’t offer several of the sports that can score. Our total included points for state titles in girls soccer, girls tennis, and girls golf, as well as second place finishes in boys golf, boys cross country, and boys tennis. Several other teams also placed in the top eight at state, adding to our point total, including boys track, boys soccer, girls swimming, and girls track.
The UIAAA awards the Director’s Cup to the school in each classification that achieves the highest cumulative point total based on state tournament results in all boys and girls sports (points for placing 1st through 16th), the successful implementation of the “Raise the Bar” sportsmanship initiative, and GPA ranking in each sport compared to other schools in their classification (which counts for 40% of the total).
Our Winged Lion teams placed second in 2A in this year’s Director’s Cup standings, with a total of 109.3 points—only four points behind the first-place school, North Summit.
Congratulations to our coaches and student-athletes on the prestigious recognition earned from both organizations…an amazing accomplishment!
